DUT Video Technology duo become first and second place at this year’s Interpret Durban Competition hosted at the Durban Art Gallery on the 21st of September 2019.

Gauteng born Khanyiso Mbalane (23) and Mamello Hlongwane (24) became first and second place in the Short Film category respectively, under the theme “IDENTITY- the common thread. An identity shapes us as a city and those who inhabit it”. Using storytelling and moving images participants had to express their own interpretation of the City of Durban in no more than 90 seconds.
The duo received Winner Certificates and personal prizes as R2500 worth of cash and broadcast lighting vouchers, Spiga (restaurant outlet) voucher and a bottle of gin individually. First placed Mbalane said “I felt I had to interpret the City from an introspective perspective hence I titled it Introspection.”Although after admitting that his perspective of the place and people who live here had changed over time than he had initially thought before moving to Durban.

Multimedia graduate at University of Johannesburg and first time competitor Mamello titled her video that became runner up “Ngenzela Mina”. “This actually was my first ever participation in any competition so I feel very happy and proud of myself for achieving this though it was unexpected because I was trying something new and different,” She said.

Initially, she had decided to show the ‘not so good’ side of the city but while shootings her visuals she opted on basing the theme on a personal level. Saying “While shooting I realised I was missing that in-depth understanding of the theme so I decided to change the whole thing and centre it personally, basically my everyday life and experiences in Durban. This has given me a better understanding of myself in the process as well.”

Both Videographers are currently in the works of their upcoming productions. Hlongwane is involved in a film based on women abuse with a group of her classmates to play an active part in the fight against the spreading epidemic while Mbalane is planning on entering two competitions, an international one on Climate change and the Provincial KZN African Film Festival before the end of October.
