Graphic Design Hosts year-end Student Recognition Awards

Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Graphic Design students were recognized and appreciated recently at this years’ annual year-end exhibition and Student Recognition Awards ceremony hosted at the City Campus, Author Smith hall.
The auditorium was packed to capacity, as parents, friends and Lectures of both third year and Bachelor of Technology (Btech) students gathered together to witness the handing over of awards, where students were being awarded for their performance throughout the year; the award ceremony was then followed by an exhibition where the students showcased their portfolio’s.
Chief Commercial Officer of the Embury Institute for Higher Education and best-selling author of the crime thriller, 31 Million Reasons, Dr Naresh Veeran who was the guest speaker of the day, shared some of his experiences in the industry and encouraged the students to develop and be driven by passion in order to make it in the industry.
“The first thing you must understand from the very beginning is, figure out that this is driven by passion, the entire trust of what we do is about passion and the sooner you realise that, the sooner you embrace that, is the more comfortable you will be with yourself and the more successful you will be,” he said.
Lecturer, Frank Kalala commended the students for their hard work and dedication
“I believe that, we as DUT are producing the best Graphic Design students in the world, we produce students who are able to think and find solution to an existing problem,” he stated.
Btech students were awarded with certificates of achievement, while Third year students were awarded with prizes along with the certificates.
Amongst others were, Shannon Mitchell, who won “The student of the year award” sponsored by Learning Curve,  Hogan Marshal, who took home the “Hard Graft Award” sponsored by DIGICAPE, and Jorden De Witt who scooped home more than three awards including “The Theory and research Top award” sponsored by Prof R.Gaede and Ms L. Ravjee.
Other awards were handed in these categories: The Number1 Megue award, three Gold Pack awards, Poetry Africa Award, portfolio of the year award and two Five star awards.

Graphic Design Third Year and BTech students showcase their work

Btech student, Karl Ludick. Graphic Design programme recently displayed their 3rd year and Bachelor of Technology (BTech) students’ final exhibition held at City Campus. The third year final exhibition consisted of 13 projects. Namely, DUT Art Gallery rebranding and awareness campaign, gender based 30 second advert, OXX T-shirt design, courier packaging, animated gif and online campaign, Baron Samedi Spiced rum campaign, Poetry Africa poster, editorial spread, IJusi Afrika Typographika, history publication, Durban map, Goldpack packaging, Instagram diary, self-branding and Behance online portfolio . Third year student, Samela Hlophe said, “The approaches on each project differed depending on what the brief required. Interior Design holds year-end exhibition and student awards

 Interior Design third year student, Thabiswa Nkonyeni who was named Top Student for 2018. NASIPHI GIGABA  Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Interior Design students’ year culminated in style as their hard work was rewarded during the programme’s year-end portfolio exhibition which coincided with recognition awards where excelling students were awarded for their hard work. The exhibition which was held at City Campus yesterday, featured works by third year and BTech students who were beaming with joy as attendees marvelled at their offering. Interior Design’s Programme Coordinator and Lecturer, Susan Barrett said the programme is pleased with the end results of the students work, considering the challenges they faced throughout the year. “We are glad the year is over and that it was a fairly successful one despite the interruptions due to protests at the beginning of the year.
